Cruise Lines Step Up Big Time
Hurricane Dorian, the strongest storm ever to hit the Bahamas, made landfall on Sunday. Contrary to predictions by meteorologists, the storm stalled and battered the archipelago nation of 400,000 people with rain and winds of 185 mph for 40 hours.
Officials say at least 20 deaths have been reported with the toll feared to rise as recovery efforts get underway. Thousands of islanders are not only hit with a shortage of food and water but also power outage. With roads, hospitals and airports impassably flooded, the only option to send relief materials to hurricane victims is through the Atlantic.
Thankfully, top travel companies, especially cruise lines, are showing their support to victims by sending aids and relief materials to the Bahamas. Top on the list include:
Royal Caribbean International announced Tuesday that it is preparing to stock its ships with relief materials including cleaning supplies, water, generators, sheets, and towels, to be shipped to the island nation. The cruise line also said that they would work closely with the Bahamian government, local organizations, Bahamian charities, nonprofits and the Pan American Development Foundation to distribute donations. The company has pledge to donate 1 million USD to help the Bahamas rebuild.
In a tweet, the Royal Caribbean said, “The Bahamas has been part of our family for nearly 5 decades. Our thoughts & support are with them during this difficult time. As part of our Dorian disaster relief efforts, we’re committing $1M to help them rebuild.”
Royal Caribbean International has a private island called CocoCay and hundreds of Bahamian locals in its workforce who have been helping with the smooth running of business activities at its destination ports in Freeport and Nassau.
Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line, the world’s most popular cruise line, has also pledged its support to rebuild the Bahamas in a tweet. The cruise line pledged to donate 2 million USD for aid and relief materials to the Bahamas following the devastations that hurricane Dorian left behind.
The cruise line in partnership with Tropical Shipping and The Bahamas National Emergency Agency (NEMA) said they would help with shipping of donated goods by concerned individuals, local leaders, nonprofit groups and the South Florida business community to areas where it’s most needed on the islands. “By working together, we can collectively provide much-needed food and supplies to people in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane.” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation. Foods and supplies donation list include tents, food, bottled water, first aid items, portable generators, flashlights, blankets, and towels, just to name a few.
Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line has also joined many other organizations by pledging to donate 1 million USD and in-kind support for Bahamas relief. “The Bahamas is such a special place to us and our guests, and we have watched the devastation created by Hurricane Dorian with concern and heartache,” Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Cruise Line, said in a statement Tuesday.
Donations will be sent to charities and nonprofits who have taken it upon themselves to provide relief efforts to victims.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that it will work closely with local Bahamian authorities to send relief materials to affected regions. In its effort to help affected victims, Norwegian Cruise Line relaunched its hurricane relief campaign, Hope Starts Here. The company’s ship will anchor in Nassau, Great Harbour Cay, and Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island. That’s not all. The company has also pledged a minimum donation of 1 million USD toward immediate short-term hurricane relief.
“Our hearts are heavy after witnessing the impact and devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian across the Bahamas,” said Frank Del Rio, president, and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “We have been cruising to these islands for over 50 years and remain committed to its wonderful people during this unprecedented event. Through our partnership with All Hands and Hearts, we vow to match all donations collected to support the country’s rebuilding efforts.”
There has been an overwhelming response from top travel companies making donations and sending relief materials to affected regions. More help is likely on its way with relief efforts expanding by the day.
